This is only the second time in the event’s 43-year history that this has happened.

Kyrgios was in superb form throughout the tournament, dropping just one set on his way to victory. In addition to his singles triumph, he also teamed up with Jack Sock to win the doubles final.

This was Kyrgios’ first ATP Tour doubles title.

The Australian star has had a remarkable year, reaching the Wimbledon final and winning two ATP Tour singles titles. With his history-making performance at the Citi Open, Kyrgios is sure to be one of the favourites heading into the US Open later this month.

It was a triumphant return for the Australian to the US capital, where he lifted the men’s singles trophy in 2019 for his last ATP Tour title then tumbled out in the first round of last year’s tournament.

Kyrgios, who lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets in the final at the All England Club last month, took just 81 minutes to defeat his Japanese opponent Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4 6-3 in the men’s singles final in Washington, to then return shortly after to the court with American Jack Sock to win the doubles final.

In just over an hour Kyrgios and Sock clinched victory over the fourth-seeded Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek 7-5 6-4, at Stadium Court at Rock Creek Park Tennis Centre .

“I’m still trying to wrap my head around it,” said Kyrgios. “It was an unbelievable week, I gave it my all.”

Sock said: “We just tried to have fun out there and we did that. Nick played phenomenal all week.”

Kyrgios’ singles triumph in Washington was his first ATP title since he won at Acapulco in 2019 and his first hardcourt title. He became the first player to win both the Washington singles and doubles titles in the same year since Arthur Ashe did so in 1978.

Kyrgios will now turn his attention to the US Open, which begins on August 31. He is seeded 27th for the tournament. He will now be one of the favourites heading into the tournament.

With his history-making performance at the Citi Open, he has cemented himself as one of the top players in tennis. We can’t wait to see what he does next!

We will now be looking to see if the Canberra-born player can carry his momentum into the US Open at the end of the month.
